Fortezza
Fortezza
One of Europe’s strongest fortresses
Fortezza is an impressive fortress from massive blocks of granite. With a size of 65,000 m² it dominates the gorge South of the reservoir. Inside, Fortezza is a gigantic maze of rooms, walkways and stairs. The upper fortress is connected with the lower fortress by a spectacular staircase with 451 steps. Fortress Fortezza was built between 1833-39, named after Emperor Franz I of Austria and was the strongest fortress of its time in Europe. But this fortress never saw any war and its technology soon became outdated.
